Many of our communities in South Carolina do not have access or financial resources to eat healthy foods on a daily basis. Location, age, income, and whether reliable transportation exists are some of the many barriers that prevent fresh produce from ever entering the home. Without healthy options, health risks increase.
That’s where we come in. We’re a program of the University of South Carolina Columbia’s School of Medicine and our mission is to promote food equity and support our neighbors in need. We partner with community-led organizations to bring fresh, affordable produce into all 46 of our state’s counties through the Fresh Food Box program and provide quality cooking skills education.
In 2023, we will finish construction on the new 18,000 square foot FoodShare Distribution Hub and Teaching Kitchen, which will help to support:
- NeighborShare delivery program to those experiencing transportation barriers and physical limitations
- Community Cooks classes for box participants and interested partners
- Culinary Medicine elective courses for USC SOMC students to engage with nutrition interventions for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases
- Training hub for non-profits throughout the state to expand the Fresh Food Box program
This Giving Tuesday, when people across the globe give back, we’re inviting you to make a local impact and share your kindness through SUPPORT THE SHARE. Together, we can ensure that every South Carolinian has shared access to good healthy food.
Will you join us?
